How to Write a Division and Classification Essay
In our daily life we very often employ the methods of classification and division. We classify people according to their qualities, appearance, intelligence, behavior, etc.
Classification vs. Division
Classification means categorization; for example, we “put” those people under some categories. This could ensue a kind of hierarchization (ordering people from one category: who is the most attractive, who is less attractive, etc.). On the other hand, we can also divide these people by groups: beautiful, sexy, less beautiful. The difference is that in the first case we try to evaluate them, and in the second one, we merely make a division and description. In all cases, classification and division go hand in hand, but still it is possible to write an essay using only one of these methods.
Division and classification essay writing
Division
In order to make an appropriate and correct division, you should define your topic. Afterwards, think more about your interpretation of the problem: how this division will express your opinion on the topic. You have to demonstrate that such division is needed and, indeed, inevitable. Once done with your definition of the issue, you should direct your attention toward some principles of division; in the example cited above this is the appearance of people (are they beautiful or not?). Try to put these people in several groups (three or four). The analysis of more than four groups will make the reader bored (unless this is an academic paper). Describe all of them: special characteristics, some particular example of each of them, etc. You can also compare all the groups, so that you will be able to arrive at some conclusion concerning the topic (for instance, what is better: to be beautiful or not?).
Classification
A classification implies categorization and the process of constructing a hierarchy. Try to construct strict criteria and follow them consistently. One of the most common mistakes here is that people mix a thing from one category with a thing from another one (while debating about international relations, they turn to geography instead of history, for instance). Remember: classification is evaluation. Thus, you will have to say a word about each category of entities. As with the method of division, you should describe the categories and the things covered by them very well, so that an intelligent reader will easily comprehend the differences.
Another advice is to focus on your topic. Try to inform your reader about a process or phenomenon which otherwise would be ignored or underestimated. People like to be familiar with new things, to look at their daily lives from a different point of view.
Sources
You can use wide-known facts, your personal experience, or analyses of other theorists. Don’t forget that your task is to formulate a thesis and to prove it, as it is with all other essays. If possible, refer to your sources. However, more important is how you perform your logical analyses.
The classification and division essay should conclude with a comparison or analogy between the groups described or categorized by you. Try to sound convincing enough, and also deal with an appealing topic. Then the reader will probably feel satisfied with your work.
